T3 Virtual scanner
Task 3 concerns the development of the Virtual Scanner. The NMR-SCOPE software (developed in UCBL) constitutes the starting point of this activity. This research will enable quantum-mechanical simulation of in vivo MRSI signals from spin Hamiltonian parameters for diverse, user-adaptable, measurement protocols that include, e.g., `spectral editing' and 2D-MRS. The spin Hamiltonian parameters in turn, can be derived from high-resolution, spatially-resolved, `magic angle spinning' ex vivo NMR, or from ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations. Note that computing power grows unabated, enabling simulation of increasingly complicated spin systems and experimental conditions. This new opportunity is to be exploited to the full. The simulated MRSI-signals serve as metabolite reference database to be used in Task T4. Finally, a contract with NIH concerning cooperation on this subject, has recently been concluded.
To my responsibilities in the network belongs develop algorithms and software providing virtual scanner functionality by simulating the quantum-mechanical behaviour of J-coupled, relaxing and spatially distributed spin systems excited by pulses. This tool will support the clinical user (the predicted spectra of individual metabolites excited by specific pulse sequences will form a base for signal analysis) as well as the research user (simulation of spatial and spectral selectivity, artifacts, method robustness, needed for pulse sequence design). Also I participate in NMR experimental work (MRI & MRS of biological samples).
